Advantages of running a full node?

I’m a little bit confused about the advantages of running a full node. I’ve set one up because I want to do some NEM development and I thought it would be best if I did it against my full node but are there any other advantages to running a full node?

Also, I’m not sure if my node is connected to the rest of the NEM network. Is there anything special I need to do to connect it to the rest of the network?

I’m running the latest version of nem-nis on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS VPS.

Sorry for double posting. So it seems that running a full node lets you harvest XEM from transactions you process but how do you associate your NEM address with your full NEM node so that you can get the XEM? I’m a bit confused on that point.

So you need 10,000 XEM in your account for both types of harvesting then?

OK. Cool. Thank you both for answering. I’ll try and get about 15,000 at some point in the future to carry out my plans.
