I am totaly new to the whole cybercurrancy phenom. I do have an account with coinbase and I have purchased a small amount. I would like to purchase som NEM but I would want to purchase for cash (US$). I don’t really want ot trade off my Bitcoin. I need help for a newbie. I have created my local wallet.

You can buy XEM/NEM from all exhanges listed in this link.
However, from my experience the easiest way to buy XEM with USD is from changelly.com. Keep in mind that changelly has limits for the first transaction depending on region. Buying from changelly is not the cheapest way, but for sure easiest. The full guide on buying XEM from changelly.
