Call for Developers / Designers

Hi All,

The core team really wants developers and designers to get more actively involved with NEM. In order for NEM to be a success, NEM needs to have a thriving community of contributors. In this topic, we're looking to get a feel for the technical expertise in the NEM community, and we may tap into it later ;). Stay tuned.

If you're interested in contributing, please post a little about your background and interests, especially if you are interested in:
(1) Front end design
(2) Front end development
(3) REST API testing
(4) Acceptance testing

Really, no interest? If we find interested contributors, we might open source NCC next month.

You might want to elaborate more what the front end skillset requirements are for those that are referred here from somewhere outside NEM so that they can get a quick understanding of what is required of them.

Hey Jaguar0625,

i'm currently testing NIS/NCC API functions and i am very interested in how NEM works under the hood. I will definetly develop some litte tools around NEM, hopfully this will help to take the movement into the world. I am not a pro dev, this is why i start small at first, but i have learned much in the last month, my main problem is my very limited time atm.

If you ask me there is no urgent need to release NCC as open source. With the APIs it should be easy to build 3rd party tools around NEM. I will try to get a friend on board, he could create some nice web sites etc.

I would like to know if there are other people out there that are planning to develop some services and websites around NEM. My impression is that especially NXT has many contributors and i would like to see this for NEM too (and it seems that many NXT stakeholdes are NEM stakeholdes as well), maybe we can support each other…

We definitely appreciate your interest and what you've been doing. We just need more people like you :).

The impetus for open-sourcing NCC isn't really for attracting ecosystem developers. It's for attracting developers who want to work on NCC, which is the primary NEM client.

We definitely need more contributors. Hence, the purpose of this thread ;).

NEM is comprised of two primary processes, NIS and NCC.

NIS is the backend process that contains most of the "secret sauce." We don't plan on open sourcing it until at least V1 is complete, but we may keep it closed for a slight time after that.

NCC is the frontend processes. It adds wallet management, more-friendly REST APIs, and the client UX. It doesn't contain anything especially proprietary. Without NIS, clones can't do much with it.

Ideally, I would like to free up more of the core dev resources to focus on NIS and have the community work on NCC with core dev support. There are a lot of opportunities here across

Are you a designer?
You can help our lead designer design the UX for some of the unannounced NEM beta features.

Do you like frontend development?
You can help our frontend developer implement the UX envisioned by the designers.

Do you like Java and designing REST APIs?
You can add additional REST APIs to NCC to enable new UXs and/or ecosystem apps.

Do you like breaking stuff?
You can write acceptance tests around the NCC (or NIS) REST APIs and/or the NCC UX (i.e. browser automation).

Hey guys,

I have spent about half of my career as a developer and half as a infrastructure engineer. I keep bouncing between the two :).

I am currently a web specialist for a fortune 50 hospital. We are primarily a NIX shop running J2EE middleware platforms back ended by Oracle RAC and front ended by F5s. I am a senior architect responsible for our operational infrastructure but also need to steer our code life cycle and architecture.

My primary knowledge base is CentOS / RHEL on both VMware / KVM virtualization platforms running on X series servers from all the major vendors on the infrastructure side.

On the software side I was trained on "XP" programming so test first coding, unit tests / acceptance tests via JUnit and FIT, frameworks like Struts, JSF, Hibernate, etc. are all in my portfolio. I also am familiar with "Selenium Grid's" for automated browser testing. I also spent many years training our staff on proper tiered architecture using Sun's "Patterns Catalog" for J2EE including proper delegate, business object, data access object, value object, etc. patterns with no code circular dependencies. Strong security and horizontally scaled applications are in my wheelhouse.

I'm also the architect / lead around our code life cycle. Maven, Jenkins, SVN, Git, branching, merging, tagging, etc. are things I work on.

I also do a lot of side projects in PHP using OO and LAMP stacks. I run a number of virtualized cloud boxes for other people's projects for small Internet sites or dynamic web sites.

I'm also adept in Adobe suite stuff, vector graphics, can write copy, can do web design, etc.

Let me know if any of this is stuff you guys need and I'll wander on to the IRC.

@jaguar

Your fired

@solix

Your highered.

Lol

Joking aside, that is an  impressive skill set! Then again I'm not a pro coder so that mostly (who am I kidding) completely went over my head. Lol sounds very impressive anyway.  8)

Nah, Jaguar is in the trenches with all this. I'm sure Jaguar can code circles around me. The trouble with being an "architect" and a "lead" is you spend half your day baby sitting other people while you stop touching the keyboard and that is why I want to be involved in something that keeps me from becoming a professional manager type that is all talk and no action.

This is my punishment for being a jack of all trades ;). However, I'm sure I can buckle down and get reacquainted with being a heads down dev again if I need to. All I'm saying is don't worry I don't plan on contributing hacky, crappy, ho hum code. I get refactoring and sound dev techniques. I wouldn't come in and squawk / crap all over your code base like a seagull.

i was only kidding :) i know jag is a hard act to follow lol it shows with the virtually bug free alpha. iv only started out on my coding path with a one year course in java, web design course and the mysql professional certification. wouldnt even try to code anything in crypto world lol far beyond my skill set - for now. ;)

welcome to nem anyway. im sure the devs will have plenty for you to do. :)

FYI: #ournem.eco on freenode. I registered that channel for all the eco devs so join in people

@solix thanks for your interest!

The specification for the NCC REST APIs can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10ZVrzuS_krjRF5rMvt5oKl3IS3VOhF_qnn2faZb7KZQ

Do you want to set up a repo on github and add some acceptance tests around these APIs (and see if you can break them ;))?

The one caveat is that we are currently reconciling the NCC and NIS APIs and there might be a few changes before we open source NCC.

Hi, I am new here, and as well in web design and front end development (converting PSD or PNG  to HTML).

I have medium experience in html/css, and learning javascript at the moment. I use Fireworks and Photoshop and I am interested to help and to improve my skills, that would be great for me.
I think I can contribute to your projects.

Please, let me know if you have something for me

Thanks for the reply. Do you do the conversion to HTML by hand, or just the automatic output from fireworks?

Maybe you can help out some on the blockchain explorer: https://trello.com/c/a9FL72Q7/47-nem-blockchain-explorer
If you are not comfortable with javascript, at least you can help to test while learning more about JS.

Thank you for your reply.
I do the conversion by hand, I use Fireworks only to design layouts. I can help testing if you need, I will check the link, and wait for your instructions.

Do you have any examples of previous work you have done?

Hi, I am sending you some examples:

Do you think you would be up to the challenge of making a web site similar to http://www.borderfree.com, using a framework like http://gumbyframework.com ?

I'm a Javascript and Node programmer with extensive experience with AngularJS as well. I have no Java experience though

That's pretty great. We're always looking for JS people :)
Plz join the Trello Ecosystem board for better coordination if you're interested.
