Can't open my wallet

Hi there,

I just installed the newest version 0.6.43.

Then I tried to open my wallet. The name of the wallet came up on the client, and I entered the password. But then nothing happened. I’m not getting an error message. The wallet plain won’t open. I know I have the password correct, and in any case, my first attempt I did enter the wrong password and got the standard wrong password error message. But with the correct one, nothing happens. I am connected to a remote node while doing this, so that I don’t have to wait for my own computer to download everything.

It’s been a while since I’ve logged onto my wallet, so I’m not sure how to trouble shoot this. Can someone please lend me a hand?

Thanks

I tried to follow the directions for removing old versions here: http://blog.nem.io/how-to-remove-old-nem-software-versions/

I did throw all the old folders into my dropbox, and I can see where the files for my original wallets are. What I can’t find is where I can put them in the new folder (the one called “nemwallet” which corresponds to the current version).

I’d really like to have my old wallet back. I know the password and I have the files, but I don’t know what to do from here.

I have the new version installed, and as far as I can tell it’s a clean install.

I then tried to import my original wallet using the private key. Since I never moved my funds anywhere once I set up the original wallet, I figured the real account private key would work. When I entered the password on file for that wallet, I was given this error message:

Error 124 NIS address book password incorrect

I sure hope I can get at my original Nemcoins, since I was one of the original stakeholders. I’d been harvesting and everything but hadn’t logged in since before the summer as life got busy.

Since I have several electronic backups of my wallet password, private key, and public key, I tried copying and pasting from one version that I know has worked for me in the past. Same error message.

If there is anything more I need to do to clear off old NEM client versions other than what I already did, I will need to be talked through that.

I do have my NEM address on file, and I was able to access it using one of the block explorers and I can see that I still have my coins there and it even looks like remote harvesting is still active. But so far, I can’t actually get to the wallet for that address. I do know the private key. But if the password I’m entering is genuinely wrong (despite it having been correct in the past), then I really don’t know what it is. Is there a way to recover the wallet if I only know the address and private key? Or is there some sort of glitch that can be fixed?

OK, I did it!

I guess I’ve just been at this too long. I was trying to enter the original wallet password, rather than the password for the new wallet I’d just created. Once I got that right I gained access to my original wallet. Phew!

I’m just thankful I’d hung onto the private key!

wow, I am glad you got it! I know you have been here since the beginning so it is nice to know you kept.

also, I would like to mention that as long as you have your private key, you can always just make a new wallet anytime and load that key on the new wallet. for this reason it is very important to always have your keys backed up. if you lose your key but have your wallet, you can get another copy of your key once the wallet is open, but if you lose your wallet and have a key, you can just load that key in a new wallet, so it is best to back up both.
