I cannot send NEM and haven't been able to at all since day 1. Everytime I click the send button I just get the message 'Almost ready. NEM Infrastructure Server is currently loading blocks. Wallet will be functional when db is fully loaded.'
Even if I leave this all day on it still says this BS, how long does this thing take to sync?

Something definitely isn't right..
blockchain is half month old and it shouldn't take more than half an hour to sync on some average internet connection.
Does it sync at all? ATM we are now on 29445th block. (you can also check on http://nembex.nem.ninja/)
At what block is your NIS now?
Maybe your firewall blocks NEM from accessing the network?
Have you tried connecting to a remote node by entering under settings the address of some public nodes form this list:

Hi thanks for the help,
yeh something definitely isn't right, I just get the yellow bar saying 'Loading blocks from db, at block: 5300 (at block 5300)' and I left it on all day yesterday as a test but it had gone up however from like block 2300 or something. However I have been able to do some harvesting and got paid for it so the network is obviously able to communicate somehow?

You can always try to connect to some other node by replacing under settings the entry localhost with some remote node address. That way your own NIS will not matter - you'll get the blockchain information from the remote node. See if that works...
