Convert between wallet types

Hi

I created a brain wallet and bought some XEM, but needing advice about which wallet is the best.

Brain Wallet is all about the long password, even though mine is long, if someone guesses that, they could get hold of my XEMs, right?

If so, how can I convert between wallets, thinking the simple wallet is probably best as I can keep it offline (wlt file) on a USB stick.

Would you agree with that last statement, and if so, how can I convert my brain wallet into the simple type?

thanks
B

yes that is correct.

you can get your private key while logged in to brain wallet on the account page. You can then create a new wallet via private key import. Your new wlt that will be created will now no longer be a brain wallet. However, someone could still get at your XEM using the brain wallet password. To ensure no brain wallet access, you will need to transfer your XEM to a new private key.

thanks for the response Saul.

How do I transfer the XEM to the new wallet? By simply sending it to the new address? Just checking if it’s possible to do it another way. thanks, B

Yep, that will be the easiest option.

thanks, that’s what I did in the end.

For anyone wondering the same thing, I did the following:

  • created a new Simple Wallet, made a note of the private key and password, as well as the address to receive XEM’s
  • logged on to my Brain Wallet
  • transferred the XEM’s to the address I made a note of earlier from the Simple Wallet (note that you get charged 1 XEM for the transfer, so the total you transfer is whatever the total is minus 1, e.g: 2578 XEM is your balance, you can only transfer 2577 XEM’s to your Simple Wallet address)
  • If you like, you can transfer a smaller amount to ensure it goes through
  • Logon on to Simple Wallet and allow it to update, took 1-2 minutes to show up.
  • take a backup of the WLT file, zip it with a password, store safely away and delete the records from your computer if you plan on waiting for some time for the value to increase.

Thanks to Saul for the help.
