Do I Need a Message When Sending From Changelly to NEM nanowallet?

I do NOT understand what a message is and when I need it.

I have ETH in Coinbase and would like to send it to Changelly to convert to XEM and then on to my NEM wallet.

PLEASE tell me…

  1. Do I need a “message” to do this?

  2. Where do I get this “message.”

  3. Is it only needed when sending XEM to changelly? Or is it needed every time XEM is involved at all?

I appreciate your help!

hello!

the message is used by exchanges when they use only one address with their user funds. the message helps identifying your payment and it is not required by the nem technology.

you wont need a message when sending to a nanowallet or stand alone nem wallet (ncc, nac…). you only need a message when sending to exchanges. and they will also usually je clear about the message to include!

Changelly gives you the message you need to post on the same page where they give you the address you need to send your NEMs. But be careful. When I first did it, I did not know about messages and I’ve just made something up. The second time, I accidentally ticked a little tickbox that encrypted the message.

My NEMs went through their NEM address but it had been 11 days and I am trying to get them to refund me my NEMs or proceed with converting them XRPs. Tried email, Facebook and tried to get their attention on Reddit. So far they have not done it. They said we’ve sent the task to our tech team. That was Thursday last week (25 May). Still not done.

It’s ridiculous. If the messages were so important to make or break a transaction, then there should have been more warning or pop ups because these errors I’ve done were so easy to make. Even then, the details of the transaction are visible on the block chain. I don’t get what their issue is if they return the funds back to the sender. They can see the sender address. I’m starting to think it’s a way to fleece people off. It may not be rational but when you’ve got thousands of dollars in NEMs sitting in their wallet and they have no reason to be keeping it for so long, you start thinking it is a possibility.

If you’re slightly unsure, don’t do it.

@gevs: Thank you! This makes it much more clear. I will be careful and send a small test amount. THANKS AGAIN!!!

@mctrader001: I will be careful. I heard about one man who has ‘temporarily’ lost $5k. Thanks again!

@gevs and @geo4, I’m just letting you both know that after 12 days, Changelly finally did come through for me and completed the transaction. If you do decide to go ahead and transact with Changelly and NEM, just take it step by step. Remember to pause before you submit and look over to make sure you have the message right from their website and that you have not ticked anything else, especially the one that encrypts the message. I would keep a separate record of the Order ID and the transaction hash and everything other information about the transaction in case things go wrong. Good luck and I hope things are easier for you than it was for me.

@mctrader001: I discovered that you can purchase NEM DIRECTLY through the nanowallet. Go to “services” then click on “Changelly instant exchange.” It took me about a day using my ETH wallet on Coinbase. But it went smoothly.

@geo4, that’s good to know. Although my bigger issue is sending out NEMs using Changelly. If you hear of other alternatives to Changelly that supports NEM, let me know. Thanks.
