Greetings fellow earth dwellers and galatic wayfarers

new to this whole scene of re-imagining money as well as everything else but at this point i dont have any faith in the current ponzi-scheme system which is bound to fall apart … and as I have no desire to learn to live off the land and forage for my meals ( i like a/c and pizza delivery too much) I think it only makes sence to re-think the whole goddamn thing from the bottom up…I bought my first bitcoin 2 weeks ago( or should I say a % of a bitcoin…im poor) tried to mine darkcoin(unsucessfully) and am educating my 47 yr old brain on these new disruptive technologies as best as i am able…nice to be here though…hi everyone! 8) i would like to participate in the NEM anyway i can…can i mine your currency with a laptop?  I shoukld probably read more here first but im at work now so Im posting on the sly and taking the lazy way out for the moment and just asking…

Hi, yes, you can mine with a simple laptop, no issue. That's what NEM is designed for - everyone with a decent cpu can participate. No need to have those expensive monsters.

However, we are not ready for harvest (we call it harvest here, because harvest is easier than digging for cryptos  ;D ). We shall only be ready for that sometime in November.

So please stay tuned. At 47, you are not too old yet. Some of us are more than half a century old and still working on this project.  :P

Welcome to our little ( for now ) community.

It's always interresting why get People get involved in this crpytoworld, i guess most of the newcomers are here because they try to make money and dont really care about the concepts, but looks like you are one of the people who are actually interrested in the whole economy aspect and I really like that.

That beeing said let me attempt to answer your questions and get you started.
First you cant mine NEM, mining can only be done on POW ( Proof of Work ) currencies and NEM is not one of them, also mining on a laptop is always a bad idea, you need expensive mining hardware if you want to make profit ( but kudos for trying! ), the reason why mining is done is to disrtibute the coins of a currency, ( every mined block gets you x coins ), in currencies like NXT or NEM all coins are distributed at launch so there is no incentive to mine - so we need something different.

Some currencies dont use POW ( like NXT for example ) but something different called Proof of Stake, POS does not require mining and expensive hardware to run in general, in NXT you dont mine but forge blocks, and get paid the transaction cost of whatever Transactions are in that block. You can forge on your laptop.

NEM will use a variant of POS called POI ( Proof of Importance ), but until NEM officially launches i guess i cant tell how it exactly works.
You can however download the alpha client and try it ( we have a Thread about it in this forum )

NEM has not yet officially launched, but you can buy a NEMstake ( = 1,000,000 coins that you will recieve on your NEM account once it launches), on the NXT asset exchange, or http://www.secureae.com/ ( didnt try that )

I suggest you inform yourself about NXT and how it works to get an idea of NEM ( we are not copying NXT but are quite similar to it )
and things like POS / forging.

And yes you should really to some research before you ask, there is so much interresting stuff to learn and nobody can give a complete answer, but if you have questions ( after doing research ) feel free to ask.
