How does the delegated harvesting work?

That is the question.  Is it similar to "lease balance" in Nxt (i.e., I can "lend" my importance score to another account)?

I couldn't figure this out; in the client, it's possible to "activate" the delegated harvesting, but what then? Where do I enter the target account (i.e., where I delegate the importance of the current account to?)?

Every account has a remote account (In the account menu you'll see that you can display the priv-key of the remote account). When you activate delegated harvesting you transfer your importance to that remote account without transfering your funds or anything which means exposing it's private-key won't be a huge risk for you.

Thanks, now it's clear.  I just thought that it would be logical (and convenient) to be able to associate one remote accout with several real accounts…

So when you harvest with the "remote" account on a VPS or a public node, your account information is safe from hackers.

Now my (noob) question is: Who takes care of the assignment of the VPS or public node ?

In other words: If you delegate harvesting, do you have to care about which node the POI is assigned to, and does this mean you don't have to be connected/on-line to harvest?
Or am I missing something here  :-\ :-[

You don't have to worry about running the node cos that's the responsibility of the person who set it up.  Once you have started delegated harvesting, you can shut everything down and forget about it…

This may seem obvious once I get to the point of having my delegated harvesting set up. But suppose I choose one public node on which to harvest. Can I at a later point change this and select a different node? I am hoping to set up a node of my own once I get some time, but in the mean time wanted to start delegated harvesting on someone else's node. Is it possible to switch later? Or do I lock myself in once I start delegated harvesting?

Yeah you just stop delegated harvesting, connect to the New node, and start it again

I just started delegated harvesting. It didn't really give me a choice of node. I just put in my wallet password and hit OK. It seems to be active now. Did I do it right? If I ever did want to choose the node, how would I do that?

Advantage of public node is they work 24/7 an when you harvest delegated with localhost when you stop NIS harvesting also stop.

under settings you need to replace localhost with a server of your choice.

You can choose a public node, or set up your own. There are lists and tutorials in the VPS subforum
Once you start delegated harvesting on a dedicated server you can close your local client.

If NIS get shut down on the delegated server for upgrades etc, then you wwill have to start your harvesting again

Right now I am testing how many harvesters can easily work on one node.  I talked to gimre and the code will be improved, hopefully and perhaps thousands will be possible.

Thanks!
