Once a mosaic has been created, is there the option to delete it completely at a later date or does it stay on the system permanently in some form?

You can’t remove mosaic.
It will expire after namespace expiration but there will be record in blockchain.

Thanks for clarifying that. Say I’d created a mosaic under a namespace on the mainnet, would I be able to transfer the mosaic in it’s entirety to another account so that it’s not attached to the original namespace?

Mosaic is attached always to original namespace because full mosaic id is namespaceid:mosaicid

Of course tokens can be transfered (if transferable) to other account but I guess it’s not what you asking.

If you want change account that have control over namespace you can modify account to 1of1 multisig. In this case cosigner will take full control over account which created namespace.
