What is your perception of NEM ?
I'd say NEM is still a movement. However we have our own currency that we'd like to push forward to reach our movement's goals. Imho technological system isn't a good fit at all.
Done
First we should create currency. We can think about if it could be "technological system" later.

I tend to agree with patmast3r. However I would like to add that as a movement it seems we are gathered together around an innovative technological platform which has a lot of potential applications. Obviously, it seems one of the first applications we will build upon the platform is a currency, but a lot of other interesting applications may arise as we make progress.
I approach this question with a view to understand if NEM is to survive and prosper then what should we define ourselves that make us different and better than all other coin and community. Secondly, what kind of game we are in ? are we in a marketing field or in a technological field ?
I think that NEM for survive firstly need developers. Couple of us are NXT observers/investors so you are aware that NXT have biggest problems with developers. It's true that most people following after developers so we want to get as many of them at the initial state. NXT have a problem because they don't have any more stakes to spend at developers so they (new devs) dont care about NXT and they don't want to get small salary for their work. We have to get as many developers at initial (stake) stage as we can because NEM without developers is dead…
Here you have one of the latest NXT conference where they are saying for most of the time that they have big lack of the devs. NEM will get to that point eventually so if we could get as many developers as we can at this stage it would be success for NEM.
We have to create big bounty for hiring developers. Not bouty like 'you'll get 250 000 of NEM if you spend your closest year of life at NEM developing.' They need to get more than average Joe.
(movie starting at 4:55 couse they are trying to deal with audio/video difficulties)

@void I agree completely and that's thing I am making sure from the start when NEM happened. That's also the reason I believe NEM have a good chance to better Nxt in the long term even we started the race later. NEM core development team is stronger than Nxt and we will have a better chance to attract new developers for core development as well as for the ecosystem later on. But besides the monetary compensation, another crucial thing is to offer new developers a vision so that they feel they are participating in something worthwhile. I believe we have that too.
We will see. But I think you got to the core of the problem. imo, we are in a technological field where technological innovation is valued the most. Marketing power can make wonder too as Doge community has shown. But to me at least, focusing on technological advancement and technological vision seems to be a fit for NEM. If technological advancements comes with a purpose then it is even better.

I also think that NEM is a movement. It has some goal, which will be achieved by several steps. The first step needs technological implementation. The verification of that step is the currency; how it works and proceeds.
Then comes more steps ...
NEM can also be New Economy Money which is also easy to understand.
NEM can also be New Economy Money which is also easy to understand.
New Economy Movement
New Economy Money
New Egalitarian Movement
New Egalitarian Money
...
Money would be the easiest step. Movement may require more ideologies and concepts ... such which are "tested". The current 'movement' ideas and their success may be too dependent in current crypto world, especially NXT and other "relatives" and those, who are not mentioned here :)
Movement is a bigger thing than Money. It would have more expectations and features to be followed; more work, etc. etc.
So, I may be taking back a little, if Movement is not yet suitable title for NEM's launch period.
Personally, I'd stick with New Economy Movement to name the push for a new economic ideology, and use the name Nem for the currency itself. I suspect Nem has an exotic feel to it for many peeps in the US - it sounds Asian, plays off the word "new"(with all the good and bad connotations that different individuals may interpret from that word), simple to pronounce. Nem wouldn't be an acronym - it would be a new word for currency. Like a dollar, or yen. Hell - Nem even sounds like the word Yen, which (I think still) has positive connotations as a strong performer.
My two cents on the topic of attracting devs - I like what you said Utopian about the vision of NEM being a draw. I think that's what sets it apart the most from other crypto's. They have the opportunity to make the world a better place for individuals. I know with my background in health care IT, that's a huge motivator for our analysts and developers. Money can attract talent, but I think vision secures it. Money only makes people happy for so long - making positive changes to people's lives is a daily reward. :) I think you'll garner more loyalty from developers who participate for the warm-fuzzies rather than the cash.
I voted technology system but I'd say it is also a currency and we should not lose sight of that.
I do hope we can really push the envelope of what people think crypto currency could do. The idea of currency as software holds so much promise waiting to be realized.
We think of crypto currency as something that "outsources" the service provided by banks with software, making them obsolete. I think of other things in the current status quo, that are relics of the pre-computer age. The very structure of corporations, companies, and other business entities, is something that comes to mind. I don't have any specific examples of what I'd do to incorporate anything like that into NEM.
But, if NEM cold become a tool to help people trade real goods/services with each other, connect, organize, conduct business, fund charities, whatever, then it would really be living up to the name!

Yes, I think NEM should be thought of as a tool and NEMsters are the people who use it (like the carpenters/masons of old).
Bump!
This seems a present discussion.
NEM is a protocol and a payment platform … after done and released, it will attract more devs that can build distributed applications that will run in the protocol providing useful services to all!
