You don't have to run the node, as long as you know some node you can trust.
I believe this will sooner or later become kind of a service, where either
a) people will be offering to connect to their nodes
b) people will be offering running nodes for you

@ButtCrack: you can choose to which NIS you want to connect in the settings page of the GUI. There is a limitation however when it comes to harvesting. Currently a NIS only allowes one harvester unless the default configuration of NIS was changed.
But the data from a client (NCC) to the server (NIS) are not sent encrypted, right? So right now this is not a good idea.

@moNom: seems you are stuck. Either download the database from bob ([url=http://bob.nem.ninja/nis4.h2.zip]bob.nem.ninja/nis4.h2.zip) to start with a given db or delete your db and sync from scratch (db file is in c:\users<your user>\nem\nis\data).
