NEM timestamping and notary service

There are many websites that provide timestamping and notary services.

http://astroblocks.com/
https://www.bitnotarize.xyz/
https://bitproof.io/

https://blocksign.com/

http://www.cryptopublicnotary.com/

http://tangible.io/
https://uproov.com/
http://virtual-notary.org/

Our current messaging can be used for timestamping and notary purposes.

To timestamp (Proof of Existence) the file:
Add a Drag and Drop function to the client.
The browser can calculate the hash of the file using Javascript.
The hash is sent in a message and recorded on the NEM blockchain.

For decentralize auditing and specialized use cases, like Proof of Process and Proof of Audit, our editable m-of-n multisig can be used.

I think this can easily be integrated inside the NEM client.

This would give users an easy to use buit-in notary service. The NEM client will be a one stop shop.

I like it :grinning:

I think t is a great idea.

It has acuraly already been half implemented via a create token feature deep in account details but needs to be finished off.

Actually as NCC is open source anybody can add that feature to NCC if they have the time.

I’d personally love to see it happen.

In the future, every image has a its “birthday ID” which is stored in NEM Blockchain.

that’s very cool!

this is a good idea, prevent copywriting of images etc …

I had a talk with Nembit last night and Factom and time stamping.

I think NEM would be a great platform to do this on.

To give you an idea Paul Snow explains that he originally wanted to make an updatable ID system where profiles of IDs could be updated. From that endeavor was born Factom. Ironically I thought in about 5 minutes and with a little advancement in code how NEM could do everything Snow wanted and much more with regards to IDs and them being updatable.

Snow states, “The point of Factom from the beginning is to support applications that can use the blockchain to document processes that execute over time. I had not intended to build Factom in the beginning, but to build an ID facility. Factom actually grew out of the fact that building a general purpose identification facility on the blockchain requires the documentation of a chain of entries… This is just one application for Factom, but it was the original motivation for developing Factom. I will admit that I totally underestimated the difficulty of implementing such a facility on top of Bitcoin. And we do not yet have plans to tackle distributed identity.”

So at any rate. If NEM could handle distributed identity, then I’m also pretty sure it could be made into a pretty amazing time stamping service.

I’ve mentioned this before, but this is an open source hash fingerprint program with soooo many options. NCC is also open source and allows plugins. http://sourceforge.net/projects/quickhash/

A good coder could design a fingerprinting service as a plugin to fingerprint docs and with a little special skills you could integrate it into a filing system and even store all the extra copies of files in a plugin for Dropbox. I actually tried like 7 months ago to get somebody to program that for me but they backed out. Such a system I’m pretty sure would be a lot easier to make, have more options, and faster to market.

@greentea
Yes, here is a good application.

How the blockchain will enable self-service government

“By putting business licenses, property titles or birth certificates on
the blockchain, governments will enable citizens to digitally conduct
transactions without lawyers, notaries or queuing at government offices”

I completely agree. We need a way to securely put this information on the chain. It would enable so many use cases. One way to do this would be to put meta-data on an account, or in an account, or even to turn an account into just a property title or birth certificate in and of itself and then lock it, and then to pass that locked account around with a 1 of 1 multisig.

A new article today.
Will Provenance Be the Blockchain’s Break Out Use Case in 2016?
http://www.coindesk.com/provenance-blockchain-tech-app/

I agree with this article. At first blockchain’s were all about how to make the perfect coin/currency. Then they moved to how to make the best 2nd party token. But I see a future where blockchains expand out to cover so many different kinds of value.

A blockchain is a great source for consensus of value and security of that value. But a “coin” is really just one kind of value. If all you want to do is have a coin be secure, then I think Bitcoin is great. But there are sooooo many other kinds of valuable data that needs to be secured and have consensus on. I would love to see NEM exploring this forms of value beyond just a coin.

Copyright Management: What If Instagram Used The Blockchain?

I was thinking about central authorities providing all kinds of permits. A building permit for example.
The blockchain could be used to prove somebody received permit x at a specific time in the past.
