New nano wallet ?s

Hello - New to NEM -just got ~ 4000xem at bittrex and got new = Empty nanowallet! It has green node and this pay to :NAAP3BW776DZN6F7KDIMQ5KRB3H3N3GD4AT56MM6
I spent a lot of time reading here about many frustrating problems when transfering from Bittrex but none mentioned important details - So before I get into trouble please clarify -

  • why same address with and w/o dashes ?

  • if Receive address (w/o dashes) is to be used ? - what is the other one for?

  • Can I transfer/deposit to new-unused-empty nanowallet? some said at least 1 xem should
    be there first ! ?? - how does it get there then ?? hope it’s not true - since it would make No sense (?)

  • Should I proceed with transfer then as is ?
    *Is 10,000 really needed for “harvesting” ? is it worthwhile ? whats involved ?

why same address with and w / o dashes?

If dashes is pointing to the ‘-’ part of the address, it does not change whether there is any / it does not exist for ordinary people.
However, if you use direct API access, ‘-’ will result in an error.

if Receive address (w / o dashes) is to be used? - what is the other one for?

NEM does not judge whether the remittance destination is used or not.
For an address that has never sent money remittance, the public key of that address does not exist on the block chain, so you can not send encrypted messages.

It seems to be a question of whether 1xem exists / not, but whether a public address exists / does not exist.
This is a limitation that the exchange is doing and is not a limitation of NEM.

Should I proceed with transfer then as is?

Numbers related to harvesting are calculated from POI which is a consensus algorithm of NEM.
Changing the consensus algorithm will change the NEM as a currency from the ground up.
The change is very delicate and requires a lot of support.

For this reason, this rule has not been changed even when 10,000 xem was US$30 this year, even when the value was lower before that.

Thank you - but I’m still not clear and not sure what to do - I’m on Mac OS Sierra (if it makes a diff.)
My “address” has dashes “-” but "Receive addres"s does not (as shown earlier) - Can I use Receive w/o “-” now then as is ? - but below it says-
“Public key: You need to make a transaction to get a public key” - so transfer from Bittrex would be such transaction ? or something else has to happen first ? what ? all this is the most complicated/ confusing part in my crypto journey so far between ~ 10 diff. coins/tokens :frowning: might as well keep those xems in bittrex ?? rather then losing them in transition … every other exchange/wallet can transfer to new/empty address - seems this one can’t ? how people start here then??
btw - what’s "API access"

Hello. In my opinion it should work for you no matter if you have empty wallet or not. But because I want be sure I sent you empty transaction (only fees). Please remember backup your private keys and .wlt+password!

Thanks a lot - I still didn’t transfer to avoid poss. problems (like including or not a message on both/either side = bittrex and nano - which some mentioned can cause problems ??- never was a problem with other wallets/exchanges …) - could you plz clarify that too.
Also which addres to use - with or w/o dashes " - " ?

When you withdrawing from exchange to your nanowallet message is not required.
Should be no difference if you are using address with dashes or not. If exchange doesn’t allow use dashes you can simple remove it.

Thanks again - wonder how does harvesting work / Need 10,000 xem 1st ? (have 4,000 so far) ?
How profitable would that be ?

Not so much profitable right now. You can hit 1-2 blocks per month. In most blocks is 0-couple xem fee.

Normally, Does Harvesting need to be ACTIVATED in order to receive XEM in nano wallet? what is Harvesting for? I was withdrawing from exchange hitbtc to my nanowallet (Harvesting status: INACTIVE) without message and without dashes since yesterday, the translation is still pending. My nano wallet on Mac OS Sierra.
