Noob, want to create a node/harvest

Hi all! I want to support the NEM network and create a node/harvest. I have an imac that sits around and doesn’t do much most of the day so I want to start harvesting/create a node.

How do I do this? I have been reading the blogs and am a bit confused with the different node/supernode types.

In short, I need 10,000 XEM to start and let it sits so that it becomes “vested”??

I’d appreciate any help/support with this.

Thanks!

You don’t have any XEM on your account. How you want start harvesting without it. It’s required 10000 XEM vested balance to start harvesting. Vested balance calculator can be found here: http://nem-tools.com/#/calculator
If you want harvest you don’t need run node. Please read about delegated harvesting https://blog.nem.io/how-to-activate-start-delegated-harvesting-in-nanowallet/
If you want run supernode you need about 3 mln XEM. With current price (0.62$) it’s big amount.

I’m not sure why you put your address. If you count on that somone send to you 10000 XEM I don’t think it’s possible. It’s over 6000$ now.

OK, thanks! Any amount would help… even if someone gave me 10 XEM that would help.

I can’t buy any XEM on exchanges because bittrex is taking forever to verify people so I can’t deposit ETH/LTC/BTC because they haven’t verified me.

How long does it take for the 10,000XEM to be considered “vested”?

It depends on this how many XEM you have. If you have 20000 XEM you will have 10000 vested in 7 days (please look at calculator link).
You can user other option for buying XEM (not only bittrex). For example Shapeshift or Changelly.

K I’ll check Changelly. Thanks

First do small transaction. Just to test it how it works.
Don’t forget save in safe place your wlt file + password and private key.

One thing–I don’t really understand. If the vision of NEM is that people can harvest on things like raspberry pi, to make it more accessible to the world… then why have a minimum of 10,000XEM to enable you to harvest? It’s something that excludes people who can’t afford to buy 10,000 XEM. I thought that NEM is about making it accessible to everyone. I get practically speaking from security reasons why you want to have a limited amount, but it totally excludes poor people.

Anyway, I’m able to afford buying it on an exchange, but it seems like it kind of defeats the purpose.

k, I will. Thanks for your help.

Harvesting is more like to give revard for this who holding XEM and can’t buy 3 000 000 XEM for supernode. Which current price 10000 XEM is big amount (over 6000$) but not so long ago it was very little amount.
Each user can buy for example 1 XEM and hold. 1 XEM is only 0.62$ now.

Ok, but that doesn’t help grow the network if everyone who wants to support it by creating a node has to fork out $6600. The network is not going to grow that fast…

If it is about having people hold XEM then make the amount people have to have proportional to the price or something, and same for the payout. Otherwise it’s going to run into the same problem as bitcoin—to make money you’re going to need tons of it to buy/build the infrastructure. It’s another rich get richer problem.

When I buy couple months ago XEM was like 0.09$ for each. Now it’s around 0.70$. It’s almost x8 and of course it alows also with small amount multiplay your funds. Limits for harvesting and supernode are in whitepaper and I never hear about plans changing them in closest future.
