Well that is indeed interesting. But I wouldn't have chosen Bitcoin as the mainchain^^

It sounds a little like they are going to make bitcoin into emunie.
And man those are some heavy duty serious names. We are talking about some people that can get serious momentum behind them. They even got Adam Back who Satoshi looked up to.
This is generally the first and only project that made me a little scared for NEM. This is a serious altcoin killer. I think that is the point too and they aren't hiding it.
That said, if what they are trying to do is expand out bitcoin into a web of chains in a similar way that emunie is trying I'm not sure if they can do it or how long it'll take. Emunie has been hit with delay after delay. They are 1200% behind schedule with still no near term release schedule. And emunie has the advantage of being able to tweak the core chain as it still pre-beta. These guys will have to work with bitcoin as is with all it's limitations. Very lofty goal.
Sure big names though.
The cog wheel of Bitcoin will bring it down altogether. It is like a defective chain driving its own prime mover and now it is taking on the additional load with this prime mover to drive a bigger cog wheel. And there is mastercoin, counterparty, etc.
Sometimes I do not understand why people would want to bother patching and working on something defective…

there is one good thing about this project.
these guys are very serious bitcoiners and very seriously invested in protecting it. all are smart and successful. and they are smart enough to look down the horizon and see the future. they clearly have seen the rise of the 2.0 alt coin like NEM coming and have felt threatened. so threatened by the new breed of altcoin coming after bitcoin that they have decided that something needs to be done now to protect bitcoin while bitcoin is still ahead.
this project is clearly a response to the exact type of thing that is going on here. they realize that 2.0 crypto like NEM is better tech, they feel threatened and they are trying to do something about it, trying to keep their edge.
to that end, that they are trying to kill us before we are born, it says something pretty great about what we are doing here.

To me, it looks like sidechains might be looking to not be the alt coin killer but instead just devour all the alt coins. Basically in that altcoins will be buying up bitcoin so that they can be pegged to it, and in doing so will just become extensions of Bitcoin.

Yes, it is key to get our release out, and gain some kind of solid foothold in someway early. Once we have done that, expansion from there can happen.
