Hi, is there a plan to add simple addresses to NEM? This has been done in the new Ripple Trade client and I think it will become essential to involve the masses and stay ahead of the game since they don't like cryptocurrency addresses.
What I mean by a simple address is that instead of a crypto address you just have a name, like an email.

I like this idea. Simple names go a long way to improve usability. But I think it is not simple to make it in a decentralized fashion. For example: Coinbase is able to allows users to use simple names for Bitcoin receiving address because it can control the the linkage between simple names and a bitcoin address in its servers. Bitcoin as a decentralized blockchain won't be able to do that.

Hi thanks for the explanation, I'm not too much of a technical guy, I just know it is 'friendly' for the masses. perhaps some genius programmer can make a breakthrough for nem :)
@Vicvegas. If we charged a large transaction fee to register an address that everyone could use, it would allow companies to protect their brand while keep squatters away. The fee should be sufficiently large, though, possibly more than registering an asset even.
@Vicvegas there is no perfect solution for this. I think what we have now with the local alias system is about as good as it will get. People tend to shop/trade with the same entities over time, so it should be fine.
You can have this but the problem is with address squatters. People would be taking Google, Apple etc.
Hi, yes they would. But that's not really our problem. That is between these companies, email and .com get along fine. Plus it is up to these big companies to register with nem quickly then :) and it also creates an offshoot of the economy in selling addresses adding value to the network. If it could be implemented technically, which sadly it seems the consensus is it cannot, then I don't think it is up to NEM to worry about address squatting.
Having said that Ripple Trade has done so and perhaps a programmer can look at how they have done it. While Ripple Labs is a centralized company, the Ripple network is a decentralized system, so I think somehow it can be possible. But I'm not sure, like I said I'm not technical so maybe someone who is can look at the discussion and see how they worked it.
