Is there an official position of NEM towards James's SuperNET?

Yes there is. James asked if we could make commitments regard backwards compatibility and common sense practices when releasing new versions. He appeared to be interested in using NEM AE instead of NXT AE as base.
What made it impossible to work on this with him was the timeline. Our AE isn't even designed yet and so we can't have it ready when James needs it. He would have been fine with a slight delay but our estimated timeline didn't satisfy his needs.
He did say that he will implement NEM Support next year.

does that mean he will use nem as the base platform for the network next year or just add it to the network like any of the other coins?

It is very interesting in concept, though as others have mentioned it feels slightly rushed. I think it best for NEM to watch and wait. James could be a huge help towards the NEM ecosystem if his projects succeed. NEM has been keeping in contact with him.

Quite frankly I have no idea what it means allthough I doubt he'll exchange the "base" later on (makes no real sense).
Like EFFV said it's prob not a bad idea to watch for now plus it's all we can do as we are just too early in development :)

I agree. There probably could not be anything worse for NEM's image than for a worst case scenario to happen where NEM was implemented as the base for the SuperNet and then because it was rushed, some flaw is discovered causing NEM's integrity to be compromised. The SuperNet, from what I have read, seems like it could be something useful but in all honesty, I don't think it is a requirement for NEM to succeed. If anything, the SuperNet needs a coin as strong as NEM to be a part of it more than NEM needs it.
There is no need to rush NEM simply for the purpose of integrating it into the SuperNet, which really does not even exist yet and is only a concept.
It will be interesting to see how the SuperNET evolves. If things work out I think we will see more such networks emerge.
