What on earth is a mosaic and why do I have 788 billion of them?

You probably misread, the nem:xem mosaic is displayed in micro xem. So you have 788000 xem, right?

Ah ok corect. I didn’t realize it was micro XEM which explains the 788 billion. I’m still unsure what a ‘mosaic’ is though. Is it some sort of name tag?

mosaics are assets you can create in the block chain. The nem.xem mosaic is a special mosaic that is equivalent to the xem in the system. You can read about namespaces and mosaics here for example:
