Why does Catapult use block rental for domains and mosaics?
Also how do you intend for this process to work in production? ie warn the user that thwir domain is about to expire?

@Mark_Price namespace rental is also in NIS1. You can renew namespace in nanowallet one month before expiration date.
As far as I know is not decided yet how/if mosaic rental will work in public chain.
Some day similar question was asked: Duration of Mosaics
I guess more information you can find on Catapult early access Slack channel.
I’m speaking specifically about the notion of renting X amount of blocks - not an expiration date per se - unless the idea is to simply calculate blocks for one year duration etc. Catapult writes blocks every 15 seconds so I suppose we just do some math to project duration.
In NIS1 you can’t change duration and it’s always one year (in blocks).
I’m not sure how flexible it will be in Catapult. I guess best place to ask/discuss about it is Slack. Maybe this knowledge is already there.
